What does a typical first week look like for a child new to Montessori?

We understand that starting a new school environment is a significant transition for both children and parents, especially for children who are new to Montessori. At Western Heights Montessori Academy, we use a gentle and supportive settling-in approach designed to help each child gradually build comfort, trust, and confidence within their new classroom environment.

During the first several weeks, our educators provide additional reassurance, individualized attention, and guidance as children become familiar with new routines, teachers, classmates, and the Montessori work cycle. It is completely normal for young children to experience some separation emotions during this adjustment period, even while they are actively participating, learning, and enjoying many parts of their day at school.

While every child transitions at their own pace, many children take approximately 6–8 weeks to feel fully settled and confident within their new routine. Throughout this process, our teachers maintain close communication with families through daily updates and conversations so parents feel informed, supported, and connected during this important stage of their child’s development.
